Big Data Management (Unipa, since 2014)

The increasing amount of data developed and stored in many application contexts, such as bioinformatics, social networks, finance, etc., pushes towards the design and implementation of efficient and effective solutions in order to manage such data and retrieve useful information. Operational databases are not suitable to this aim. In this class, the design and development of Data Warehouses will be studied and a project will be developed by work-groups. Basic notions of data mining will be also provided, and specific issues related to the problem of big data, such as data integration, NoSQL as well as the analysis of some practical scenario will be studied.

Computer Architectures (Architetture degli Elaboratori, Unipa, since 2012)

The internal organization of processors is studied with special care to the logic aspects and microprograms. The basic operations (or "instructions") available within the processor will be shown as well as how to use these basic operations to write complete (working) programs in "assembly language".

Approaches for biological network analysis (e.g., alignment, clustering, etc.) are shown and discussed, as well as some sketches for image compression and motif extraction in 2D.

The main goals of this course are to provide basic notions about theory of information, computer networks, operative systems. The knowledge of word processors and worksheet processors such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel are required.
